DUMBO, following the success of Pinocchio and Fantasia the year before, was the fourth in Disney’s animated feature series that began with Snow White.  DUMBO was released in October, 1941 just six weeks before the Attack at Pearl Harbor.

Based on a children’s book, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, by Helen Aberson and Howard Pearl, the movie told the story of a young elephant with oversized ears, which was mocked for his unusual feature.  His mother taken away by the circus owners, he had to learn to depend on himself and to struggle through challenges to overcome his deepest fears.

The beloved story focused on a strong message about overcoming personal adversity and difficulties by never giving up, a message that resonated with Americans on the brink of war.
